Custom Compounding
Advantages of Custom Compounding
In the 30’s and 40’s about 60% of all medicines were compounded. However, in the 50’s and 60’s mass manufacturing of pre-measured drugs changed the role of the pharmacist from preparer of medications to dispenser. Demand for professionally compounded drugs has been on the rise as patients and physicians seek alternatives to the limited number of commercially available strengths and dosages.
Rather than being a “one size fits all” prescription that is produced in mass quantities, compounded medications are developed to be formulated and delivered in ways that better fit the patient.
How it works
Almost any medication can be compounded. Typically, compounded medicines are ordered when the patient has a need that cannot be addressed with traditional medications. With your physician’s consent, some of the situations we are able to help with include:
- A medication has been discontinued by the manufacturer and is no longer commercially available. We can create the medication with the necessary ingredients.
- A dosage form doesn’t work out for a patient. We can create medicines in different strengths and in the form of lollipops, creams, gels, capsules, liquids, effervescent powders, sprays, troches, and even sublingual drops.
- One of the ingredients is intolerable for the patient. We can omit the offending ingredients including dyes, alcohol, lactose, and sugar.
- An alternative medication is needed, because standard treatment has failed. Hormone replacement for men and women is an area where we are seeing success for patients seeking an alternative.
- Poor compliance, we can combine compatible drugs into a single dose.
